Google has been changing its logo to pay tribute to significant events in history. Last week, it was Gandhi’s photo that appeared alongside the login to commemorate his birthday, the week before it was Google’s 11th birthday.  Today’s logo is a barcode because it was 57 years ago that the first barcode patent was issued. The first patent was entered by inventors Norman Woodland and Bernard Silver. The original patent applied to a system that encodes data in circles and could be scanned from any direction. Over time, the barcode system evolved into the rectangular barcode with strips of black and white line which is what we see on your grocers shelves today.

If you click on the barcode on the google page, an assortment of articles show up that give you information on the barcode.
