[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap]ask any gamer what the top three consoles in the video game industry are and you can bet that they will list off the big three. Microsoft’s Xbox, Sony Playstation and the Nintendo Wii. These three entertainment giants have been in competition with each for over twenty years now. With this in mind, would it surprise you to learn that Nintendo and Sony nearly partnered together to create their own console, called the Nintendo Play Station?

The images above are of the incredibly rare prototype Nintendo Play Station, which was created by both Nintendo and Sony back in 1991. The Nintendo-Sony prototype model was found by a businessman’s son. This businessman supposedly had ties to a former Sony executive who many believe is Olafur Olafsson, who was the chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment back in 1991. The photos were posted on Reddit by the son whose username is Dnldbld.

The prototype never entered mass production because back in 1991 at the Consumer Electronics show Nintendo stabbed Sony, who had just showcased the Nintendo-endorsed SNES-CD, right in the back by announcing that they would be partnering with the electronic firm Phillips instead of Sony. Ken Kutaragi, the Sony executive, was embarrassed and furious with Nintendo’s sudden betrayal and began calling for funding from the company to build their very own console without Nintendo’s help. This console, famously known as the Playstation, was then produced by Sony. It was this rift between Nintendo and Sony that started the intense competition between Sony and Nintendo, and later Microsoft.

Dnlbld said that he is searching for the power supply cord for the prototype and he will try to turn on the system for the first time in nearly twenty-five years. If he is able to accomplish this task, the next question on everyone’s mind is if there are any playable games for the Nintendo Play Station. Regardless, it was this rift between Nintendo and Sony that lead the consoles that we know and love today.
