Disney confirms Chiwetel Ejiofor will play Stephen Strange’s nemesis and fellow magician.

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he Doctor Strange casting team obviously have a thing for Oscar-nominated Brits. Ejiofor will star alongside 12 Years a Slave co-star Benedict Cumberbatch and the recently-cast Tilda Swinton as Baron Mordo. In the comics, Mordo and Strange are students of the Ancient One, but Mordo’s inclination towards black magic leads him to turn on his mentor and attempt to kill him in an effort to claim the Ancient One’s title of Sorcerer Supreme.

We’re not sure if this Mordo will go so far. Deadline suggests that Ejiofor’s version of the character will be made up from a handful of characters in Doctor Strange folklore, so he will be far too complex to be considered a true villain. This is a fairly minor change from the comic books when compared to Swinton’s casting as the traditionally-male Ancient One, but it emphasizes further that Marvel’s take on Doctor Strange will be both original and unpredictable.

Doctor Strange premieres on November 4th 2016.
