Deadpool Surpasses Iron Man at the Box Office

The film has been out for over a month now, but the Deadpool train is showing no sign of slowing down.

Everyone is still talking about last week’s Captain America: Civil War trailer, but this week, 20th Century Fox got its own back, with Deadpool surpassing Marvel’s original Iron Man in domestic gross. Tim Miller’s directorial debut earned $10.8 million at the domestic box office alone this weekend, bringing its total gross up to $328 million.

This means that Deadpool has officially out-earned Iron Man, which took $318.4 million at home, and is fast catching 2013’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Not bad for an R-rated comic book movie starring Ryan Reynolds (whose previous comic book outings have been infamously underwhelming). Guardians came out of nowhere to make $333.1 million domestically, but Deadpool‘s success is perhaps more surprising.

It’s unlikely that Deadpool will catch the two Avengers movies, which both grossed over a billion dollars worldwide, but this is just the beginning for the Merc with a Mouth.

We already know that he shares the same universe as the X-Men, and that a sequel with Cable is coming. Who’s to say that the franchise won’t achieve Avengers-level success as its universe expands? The sky is the limit, especially when you have a marketing team like Deadpool‘s.

Deadpool 2 is expected to premiere in 2018.
