Variety reports that Disney is developing a film adaptation of the popular young-adult book series Artemis Fowl, and Kenneth Branagh has signed on to direct.
Branagh has had a long career as both an actor and director in the theater and in Hollywood, and his recent works include directing Thor and the live-action Cinderella for Disney.
Irish playwright Conor McPherson is in talks to write the film’s script, and Harvey Weinstein and Branagh will produce the project.

Written by Eoin Colfer, this series of sci-fi fantasy books follows the titular teenage genius and master criminal, who in pursuit of fortune, is often in conflict with fantasy races like fairies, pixies, and goblins.
Ever since 2001, a film adaptation of the series has been rumored to be in development, and in 2013, Disney announced that the project would be happening with help from The Weinstein Company.
As the series has spanned eight novels, chances are Disney is pushing to make Artemis Fowl a brand new big franchise, and with high-caliber talent like Branagh on board, they just might be able to.
