Disney Isn’t Planning On Doing An R-Rated Marvel Movie

Deadpool was a huge success, but Disney is standing firm on this matter!

[dropcap size=small]L[/dropcap]ast month, Fox Studios unveiled Deadpool, their first R-rated superhero movie and it’s one of the best turnouts in cinema history. Currently grossed at $619 million, that’s more than X-Men: First Class and Ant-Man combined runs in theater! So of course, there have been talks of future Marvel heroes that could also star in R-rated movies.

But, before we get ahead of ourselves, Disney chairman Bob Iger has it set in stone that the men and women of Marvel Cinematic Universe won’t be featured in any R-rated movie anytime soon. Iger said this during a Disney investor call:

“We don’t have any plans to make R-rated Marvel movies,”

Pretty straight forward answer and honestly, none of this should come as a huge surprise. Just look at all of the movies that have been made throughout the years that haven’t been rated R. Disney’s biggest reason for not making R-rated movies is their reputation for creating family-friendly content.

Yes, Deadpool will spark other R-ratings for superheroes because we have never seen a superhero movie like it. 20th Century Fox will consider rating The Wolverine R and Warner Brothers announced that Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice will have an Ultimate Edition that will be R-rated when it’s released on disc.

Should this be how we go about these superhero movies after Deadpool? Probably not, but after seeing what Deadpool could do, who can blame them trying to improve their own products for something that worked? Only time will tell to see if the Deadpool blueprint works for other companies.

But honestly, Marvel already has R-rated material for their company. Just go on Netflix and watch Jessica Jones or Daredevil. These shows have done pretty well and season 2 of Daredevil will be released to Netflix in a couple weeks. Netflix is the loophole for R-rated material and Marvel doesn’t really need to make R-rated movies. See, now that’s a win-win situation!
