Geek of the Week – Staff Edition

by

Each week, we plan on giving spotlight to one of our fellow geeks, giving them a chance to show off their most prized collections and their, well… geekiness!

This week, our geeks are the staff! We had a look into our own to see what they love most.

Some collections are larger than others, but all of us here are Geeks at heart. And with that comes an irrefutable passion and love of movies, games, comics, and pretty much anything else that falls under the nerd/geek category.

With all of that in mind, take a look below at some of our writing staff members most glorious collections (except for Jack, feel free to make fun of him below in the comments).

Brief summary of collection: Here’s my amiibo collection. Yes, I know it’s pretty lacking compared to other amiibo collections, but the six I currently have are some of my absolute favorite Super Smash Bros. characters. Smash Bros. is one of my favorite video game series, and it features some of my favorite video game characters, so despite most amiibos being hard to find (looking at you, Lucario), I couldn’t resist picking up these guys up.

Favorite thing in collection: My Ness amiibo. Ness is probably the rarest amiibo I own, but more importantly, he’s probably my favorite character in all four iterations of Smash. Ness has a very unique moveset and playstyle, and he fights with a yo-yo. Again, he fights with a yo-yo.

Favorite geek memory: Beating Red in Pokemon Silver with the help of my old neighbor. Thanks again, Andrew!

Favorite game: Kingdom Hearts. Disney and Final Fantasy shouldn’t work together, but for some reason, they do. This game has great action RPG elements, an incredible score, and a lively story that avoids the complexities of its sequels and spin-offs. Play it if you haven’t.

Favorite movie: Pinocchio. Yes, it’s an animated movie from 1940, but believe me, it holds up today. It’s hilarious, heartfelt, and expertly animated. Pinocchio is the greatest animated film of all time, and it also happens to be my favorite film of all time.

Favorite comic/comic book character: Spider-Man. I believe in you, Marvel Studios. Help me forget that The Amazing Spider-Man movies ever happened.

Favorite TV show: Parks and Recreation. It is literally the best show ever.

Brief summary of collection: The collection is small, but slowly growing, due to the fact that living in a dorm room, for most of the year, does not give you a lot of space to put things. The two comics are not mine; my dad has been collecting comics since he was a kid and our attic is filled with 50 plus boxes of them but those are two of the gems that he owns. The Pokemon cards are only the tip of the iceberg but they are some of the first edition/holos that I own. I’m currently working towards completing a set of the original 151 from the Base, Fossil, and Jungle sets and I’m only missing about 10 cards at the moment (Charizard is a dastardly little guy to try and find).

Favorite thing in collection: The favorite thing in my collection is my Pokemon cards. I was cleaning out my room, before I went off to school, and found an old box of all my cards. When going through it, I realized how close I was to having the original 151, so I got a binder and sleeved them all up and I plan on framing them all when I complete the set.

Favorite geek memory: My favorite geek memory was in 2008 when my dad and I saw Iron Man. I was sort of into comics before that but after I saw that movie I read all my dad’s comics. Whether it was Marvel or DC, I would read it all–and it was all interesting to me. That was really the starting point of me becoming a geek.

Favorite game: Batman: Arkham Asylum is my favorite game because the story was incredible. Rocksteady really did something incredible with that game and I have played through it multiple times. The dynamic between Batman and The Joker was perfect and the cast of villains included some of Batman’s greatest foes. It was also the first game I got 100% on. Well, not exactly 100%, more like 98% because some of those Riddler trophies are close to impossible to find.

Favorite movie: My favorite movie is Pacific Rim due to the fact that it embodied everything I have ever wanted in a movie since I was a kid. I was a huge fan of Godzilla, as a kid, and when I found out that there was a movie coming out about giant alien monsters, fighting gigantic robots, I was as giddy as a school girl. The fight scenes were awesome and I loved the design of the Jaegers and the Kaiju. I could not be more excited for the sequel.

Favorite comic/comic book character: Favorite comic is a tie between The Killing Joke and Watchmen. The Killing Joke told the origin of one of my favorite villains and the story was, overall, well written. Watchmen was a dark story and that really stuck out for me. It was different from anything else I ‘d ever read.

Favorite TV show: Attack on Titan is, by far, my favorite show at the moment. My friend showed me it about a year ago and I have been hooked since. It is a beautiful mix of wonderful character development and badass, violent action sequences. Absolutely can not wait for season 2 to come out next year.

Brief summary of collection: My favorite artist, Alex Pardee, created a character named Bunnywith many years ago. Over the years AP has created hundreds of limited edition prints of this Bunnywith character in all sorts of differently themed situations. Typically they’re made for specific art gallery installments and conventions. Over the years I have tried to collect my favorites. Some I’ve even gotten autographed in person.
Favorite thing in collection: My favorite piece to date amongst my collection of Bunnywith prints would have to be my Guardians of the Galaxy themed print, aptly named “Bunnywith a Bunch of A-Holes.”
Favorite geek memory: A favorite geek memory of mine that immediately comes to mind would be when I was in Hall H during San Diego Comic-Con in 2013 when Zack Snyder came out on stage and dropped the Batman v Superman bomb on everyone. There’s nothing quite like the energy of 6500 geeks yelling out in ecstasy.
Favorite movie: My favorite movie is Pulp Fiction. No explanation necessary.
Favorite video game: If picking my favorite video game was based on how many hours I’ve clocked in on it then the winner would be Super Mario Bros. 3 for SNES, however, this isn’t based on hours, so I choose GTA V.
Favorite comic/comic book character: I’ve never really been one to read comics (or anything for that matter), but I’ve always had an appreciation for Batman.
Favorite TV show: No matter how many Breaking Bads and Game of Thrones’ come out, nothing even comes close to how much I enjoy watching Friends. I’ve seen every episode so many times that I can almost quote them word for word yet I’ll still sit and binge watch for hours.

Brief summary of collection: In addition to a large collection of figures and games, I also have a collection of comics consisting of many rare issues, such as The First issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, all three variants, with the White Background Direct Edition signed by writer Brian Michael Bendis, the first issues of The Walking Dead, and a signed copy of Kick-Ass issue #1. My passion for anime even ranges, so far, as to having a nearly complete collection of every first edition Pokemon card ever created (Wizards of the Coast version), including complete 1st Edition sets of Fossil, Jungle, Team Rocket, Gym Heroes, Gym Challenge, Neo Genesis, and Neo Discovery.

Favorite thing in collection: Pokemon Card Collection

Favorite geek memory: Trading Pokemon cards in the back alley of my elementary school.

Favorite game: Elder Scrolls 3 for Original Xbox (favorite game I own, not favorite of all time). Favorite of all time is Ocarina of Time – N64.

Favorite movie: Shaun of the Dead

Favorite comic/comic book character: Favorite Comic: Ultimate Spider-Man, favorite character is Ultimate Peter Parker (comic book version, not the lousy Disney XD show that stars Drake Bell).

Favorite TV show: Game of Thrones

Brief summary of my collection: Being a poor student, I don’t have much in the way of anything, let alone game consoles, comics, etc. I did manage to find an old, broken N64 lying around. I have a lot of broken N64s. I did those drawings at university. Because coursework.

Favorite thing in collection: DVDs
Favorite geek memory: Just the other day, I set a personal best lap time around Koopa Troopa Beach on a friend of mine’s Mario Kart 64. I also beat his best time, but that was easy. I can’t think of anything too memorable – watching The Avengers?
Favorite game: It’s the N64 again. Diddy Kong Racing. Underrated.
Favorite movie: I couldn’t pick one, but my favorite comic book movie is Batman Begins. I love a good origin story and I was just grateful for anything after Batman and Robin. Also I’m Batman.
Favorite TV show: Breaking Bad, then Dexter. Game of Thrones is my favorite thing on right now, but season 1 of The Flash topped it this year.
Favorite comic book character: Tough call between Captain America and Flash.
Favorite comic book: Probably Flashpoint, but I love Marvel’s Dark Phoenix Saga and Civil War.

Brief summary of collection: I’m an avid game collector. Most of my collection spans throughout various game consoles, everything from SNES and Genesis games (the Golden Era of gaming, and my personal favorite) to PS4. I made the mistake of selling my NES when I was young, so I plan on restarting that collection up real soon. I have to have near 400 games and their respective consoles.

Favorite thing in collection: I have a boxed copy of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. It’s not sealed, but I have the box. A sealed copy is my Holy Grail.

Favorite geek memory: I remember when Dragon Ball Z was new in the U.S., and they only aired the original Ocean dubbed Saiyan Saga. I was 8 years old when I started watching DBZ, and my favorite memory would be going to our local game store because they sold bootlegged, subtitled copies of the rest of the series as they aired.

Favorite game: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars will always be my favorite game. Some honorable mentions include Ocarina of Time (N64), Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (PS3), Pokémon Red (GB) and Ultima Online: Renaissance (PC).

Favorite movie: I have a couple, but if I had to pick just one: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Honorable mentions include: Guardians of the Galaxy, Toy Story, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Adventureland (shut up).

Favorite TV show: Dragon Ball Z will always be my number one, but here are some other shows that rock: Parks & Rec, Adventure Time, One Piece, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad and Dexter.

Favorite comic/comic book character: Spidey, all the way. Honorable mentions: Captain America, Iron Man, Batman, Deadpool. As far as comics go, my favorite series, growing up, was Archie Comics’ Sonic the Hedgehog. Archie’s recent Mega Man series is also good.
