‘Overwatch’ Competitve Ranked Mode Limiting Teams to One Character Limit Per Team

Overwatch Competitive Mode will soon incorporate a one-character limit in a future update.

As I continue to play Overwatch online, I notice that I am always matching up against teams with multiples of OP heroes like Bastion, Mei, and my personal least favorite, McCree. The current Overwatch Competitive Play allows players to play as any character they would like, regardless of how many other players have already locked in that hero. However, in a recent patch notes release, Blizzard stated that teams will soon only be able to choose one of each character in Competitive Play mode.

Tournament games have already put this rule into effect recently in response to many competitive teams running team compositions with multiples of characters. Developers would like to now add this rule to Competitive ranked mode as well, while leaving quick play mode out of this new rule update. Ideally this will allow for more balanced team compositions in ranked play and also allow players to acquire a more diverse hero pool.

Single-hero competitive play has the ability to really change how ranked play works and it is sure to receive mixed reviews from players who are accustomed to playing multiple-hero team comps. No release date has been revealed regarding the new update regarding single-hero gameplay, but with the previous urgency regarding Overwatch updates by Blizzard, it is sure to come out very soon.

Competitive play Overwatch can currently be played on Xbox One, PC, and PS4.
