A third installment is expected, despite Vol. 2 not seeing theaters yet!
Expectations for the Guardians of the Galaxy movie series have been high long before the release of the first movie. But with Vol. 2 getting released in a couple months, there have been talks of a third movie already, with Guardians director James Gunn saying: “There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure.” Gunn elaborated on his statement for a third movie.
“There are no specific plans for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’” he said. “But we know unless something goes horribly — which is always possible, you never know — I think that Marvel would want to make another movie. [Marvel chief] Kevin Feige a year-and-a-half ago said, ‘Yeah, one of our things that we’d be thinking about will be a ‘Guardians 3.””
But is Gunn wrong? We have all anticipated the series to go on for more than one or two movies. Based on how the first movie went, I don’t see anything going wrong that would cancel Vol. 3 of the series. Gunn went more into his statement, but talked about how it would personally affect him.
“I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.”
Based on what he has already done for Marvel, he should take some time to think about this. Gunn did say that he wants to make another big movie after Vol. 2, which should give us all a sigh of relief for now.
“I love making big movies, that’s my thing. It’s not about wanting to go back and tell the story of a diseased toe for $5,000. I would like to make another big movie. So is that ‘Vol. 3’ or not? Is that the thing I’d want to do next or not? I don’t know, we’re talking about it. We’re figuring things out. And we’ll see where it goes. I’m excited about where the Guardians are gonna go, I’m excited about what they can do, and I have a thousand ideas for where the characters would go and the things they would do and what would happen next.”
It sounds like he really wants to make a third ‘Guardians’ movie and may need some time to think over what he wants to do or how he wants to go about it. Understandable, considering the high expectations that follow making this series and how it will tie into an eventual team-up with the Avengers. Despite Gunn not wanting us to assume he returns for a third ‘Guardians’ movie, I think he will be back.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will hit theaters on May 5th!
