Sabertooth was very close to showing up in Wolverine’s final outing.
We loved Logan. It was the perfect finale to Hugh Jackman’s legendary portray of Wolverine, and it somehow managed to ignore most of the 15+ years of X-Men movie continuity.
However, it seems at one point there was going to be more connections to prior films in the franchise, such as Logan’s first solo outing, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Specifically, it looked as though Logan’s half-brother Sabertooth, played by Liev Schreiber, was going to cameo in the film, but that didn’t happen.
In a recent interview with Variety to promote his film Chuck, Schreiber explained that there were plans for Sabertooth to show up in Logan, but things fell through.
“There was an invitation early on from Hugh [Jackman] and [director James Mangold] and I would have loved to work on it,” says Schreiber. “It was very difficult given “Ray Donovan’s” schedule, and I think they went a different direction as well with story.”
It makes sense, seeing as Schreiber is a busy bee with his Showtime series Ray Donovan, and the actor went on to praise Logan and his time working with Jackman.
“I think it’s a terrific movie. I’m just very proud of Hugh and the way that he handled himself with that franchise and that character. It was a great experience to be involved with one of them and to get to work with them. I had mixed emotions when I heard that he was going to retire.”
As cool as it would have been to see Sabertooth again, we’re super happy with the version of Logan we got, so maybe there will be another opportunity for Schreiber to pop into an X-Men movie.
Plus, we’ll always have the beginning of Origins: Wolverine (easily the best part of the movie).
