[dropcap size=small]N[/dropcap]ellie Andreeva of Deadline recently reported that Netflix has emerged the victor in a bidding war to make a reboot series of Irwin Allen’s seminal Lost in Space.

The new series is looking to be a ‘grounded’ sci-fi saga series that will follow the trials and tribulations of one family who left earth and have – as the title of course indicates – become lost in the space. As they traverse the alien worlds, we’ll witness their struggle to stay unified as a family.

In the original series – which came out in 1965 – the story played around with the idea of humans attempting to colonize other worlds throughout the far reaches of space, and was set in the then-futuristic year of 1997.

It followed the Robinson family who were selected from millions of volunteers from the United States to be the first family to settle on a new planet, and they race against Earth’s other nations to be first humans to successfully do so.

Writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless are said to be penning the new series as the writers at the forefront of the project, with Neil Marshall (who directed a few episodes of Game of Thrones, as well as horror thriller The Descent) directing the series.

Netflix has yet to confirm the rumours, but producer Kevin Burns of Synthesis Entertainment has apparently been very eager to get the series running, and is said to be ‘passionate’ about getting it made.

Burns has even reportedly attempted to get the project going with NBC but was unsuccessful, and is said to have worked closely with Irwin Allen’s widow before her death in 2013.

We have no indication of who might be cast. How can you re-invent Dr. Smith? No one is quite like actor Jonathan Harris, that’s for sure. He deserves the moniker of TV’s best screamer.

Has Netflix truly adopted the Robinson family? Well, only time will tell.

If the series does get made, it’ll be very interesting to see how a revamped version of the 60’s idea of the future will be brought into the 21st century, and if they’ll retain the retro feel of the original series.
