When it comes to Nintendo’s handheld consoles, there really is something for everyone.

[dropcap size=small]W[/dropcap]hen it comes to Nintendo’s 3DS handheld, I’ve always found the 3D element rather lacklustre. My eyes don’t especially love the 3D tuning, and as such, I’ve always had the feature switched off whenever I reach for mine.

The 2DS was Nintendo’s answer for those whose eyesight was badly affected by the 3D implementation, with children under 9 being the main target audience for that particular line of handhelds.

The flat, unbending 2DS with its smaller screen always kept me from investing, but what about an XL version that does actually neatly fold away?

Enter the New Nintendo 2DS XL

Yes, Nintendo is dropping 3D and bringing us an updated XL version of the 2DS.

Thinking of picking one up when it’s released July 28? Well, I’m here to give you a rundown of everything you need to know about this new handheld before you make your final decision, so without further ado, let’s take a look!

  1. Clocking in at $149.99 (or £129.99), the new XL 2DS is slightly more affordable than the current New Nintendo 3DS on the market.

2. Available in two different colours – white with a neon orange trim, and black with neon blue trim – its biggest selling point has got to be the new “ergonomic design” of the handheld, which includes an 82% screen size increase.

3. The New Nintendo 2DS XL also has additional controls such as the C-Stick for advanced camera controls in-game to improve the gameplay experience that much more, and the ZL and ZR shoulder buttons give you more options.

4. The new handheld also boasts of a fast processor for shorter loading times, and a lightweight design with a more secure folding feature than other handhelds in Nintendo’s line-up.

It may seem like this handheld came out of nowhere after the release of Nintendo’s console hybrid (the Switch), but the New Nintendo 2DS really does fill that last remaining hole in Nintendo’s handheld market. If you’ve never been fussed by the 3D feature, and the look and size of the current 2DS kept you away, then the XL addition was made for you.

You can pick up a New Nintendo 2DS XL July 28.
