Sir Patrick Stewart discusses his character in the upcoming film, and talks on the end of the current X-Men film series.

[dropcap size=small]W[/dropcap]e’ve known since May that the upcoming third Wolverine film will be Hugh Jackman’s last outing as the iconic character; and just recently we’ve learned that Sir Patrick Stewart will return as Professor X for the film as well.

The role of Professor X in the sequel has been a much-speculated topic, especially with rumors that the film will draw inspiration from the Old Man Logan comic book arc, where Charles Xavier did not appear.

To quell some fan concern, Stewart addressed what his character’s role in Wolverine 3 during an interview with Screen Rant.

“I am told a Wolverine movie in development that would include Charles Xavier, but in a very different Charles Xavier than the one we have seen before. And I don’t quite know what that means, but I am very very excited about it. I love Hugh and I love working with him and James Mangold I believe is set to direct and he is terrific so we shall see.”

Stewart also addressed the rumors that Wolverine 3 will conclude the X-Men film universe, which began with Bryan Singer’s original in 2000.

“Everybody associated with that project (X-Men), they are fantastic… the actors, the crew and the directors and now that Singer is back directing it because the first two were wonderful movies. Yeah, I would go happy into old age doing more X-Men, but something tells me from what I read that Hugh said it may be over soon. I don’t know what the studio will think about that. We’ll see. He’s a terrific character, but I am looking forward to… if what I have been told is true… to a different version of Charles. We shall see.”

“A different version of Charles;” could this mean a villainous Professor X? Possibly, or perhaps Charles is just more involved with the conflict of the film then he has been in the previous Wolverine films.

Despite rumors that the current X-Men film series is coming to an end, Fox has a full mutant movie lineup for the next couple of years. There’s Deadpool, coming February 12, 2016, X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27, 2016 and Gambit on October 7, 2016.

The untitled third Wolverine film will hit theaters on March 3, 2017.
