Just a little bit different than how others do it.

[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]n a recent interview with Collider, Star Trek: Beyond co-writer and actor Simon Pegg sat down to talk about the writing process for Beyond.

“I went to LA,” said Pegg, “and we started out in a room full of, at Bad Robot, it’s just got white boards around the room, just blank white boards — which was a terrifying thing to see. And then we just filmed them and went through so many iterations and story ideas. Eventually, we began to hone in on what we have now, and it was a very accelerated, intense process — and a difficult one, because it’s very difficult to write a film in pre-production, because every idea you have they want to build or design, and it might not be a good idea. Sometimes you don’t have the time to go, “Wait a minute, that’s not a good idea. Don’t build that.”

This a little bit different from a more linear and direct way.

In the interview he also said that they allowed for additions to the script mid-scene if the actors felt that their characters may act or say something different. Pegg said that it allowed for little character “quirks” that really help make the characters feel more natural.

Simon Pegg also gave some insight into the character dynamic of Scotty, who he plays in Beyond. He said that Scotty is one of the few people that Kirk can have a real one on one with besides Spock or Bones. He also said that the characters will be more of a family in Beyond than in the previous Star Trek movies.

Star Trek: Beyond releases in theaters July 22.
