The first Sonic game reverts to his past, with levels similar to previous games. The second game is untitled, but will have classic and modern version of Sonic in a quest to defeat Eggman.

Sonic Mania is a 2-D platform game that will have visuals, gameplay and controls similar to the classic Sega games. Acts and zones will be remade from all the past games, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles. These will be added to the new levels that will be made for Sonic Mania. So it will be like going through a time machine…with added content.

Sonic Mania is developed by Sega of America, with PagodaWest collaborating on the project as well. Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley, developers who helped develop Sonic ports on mobile phones, are also helping with development on the game. Team leader Takashi Iizuki says that more will be revealed about the game this year.

Sonic Mania was born out of our fans’ love of the classic Sonic 2D platform games,” said Iizuka. “This type of collaboration is a first for Sega and we hope everyone will be both surprised and delighted by this title. Sonic Mania has been a passion project for the entire team and we look forward to sharing more details about it later this year. Having the game actually playable at the event itself tonight was testament to the dedication of the team behind it.”

The second game will be a new quest created by the Sonic team, featuring both classic and modern Sonic, similar to Sonic Generations. Although a title has yet to be announced, it’s release will be sometime in 2017 during the winter holidays for the Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo NX. You can watch the trailer for this below!

In addition, Sega also announced that Sonic Dash has reached over 200,000 downloads since it’s release on March 7, 2013. Sonic Dash will receive a special in-game event that will add Green Hill Zone and classic Sonic as a playable character. The event will only last a week, but players will be able to unlock them even after the event. Sonic Dash is available on iOS, Android, Amazon and Windows phones.
