Star Wars Theory: Could Rey be on the Dark Side?

Some silly, some eyebrow-raising, and some absurd, many theories may get you wondering just who is on what side of the Force…

If you have not seen the movie, be warned for some thoughts and or facts below are bound to be spoilers. We won’t tell you again.

Consider what we know, and what we THINK we know. Let us recap some thoughts to get those Star Wars thought juices flowing…

Kylo Ren

  • He is on the Dark Side… or is he? He wields a red lightsaber, but he demonstrates very little use of any Dark Side Force powers (no choke, no lightning) but he does stand on the side of the First Order.
  • Ren is/was a member of the ‘Knights of Ren’, a cult of Vader-worshipers who collect relics once belonging to the Dark Lord.
  • Kylo is the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa-Skywalker, thus making him the grandson of Anakin Skywalker/Vader and nephew to Luke Skywalker.
  • He is not known to use any fighting style that resembles any Sith Lords (that we know of as far as the cinematic universe is concerned).
  • Kylo Ren was sent away by Leia and Han, though they did not clarify if this was on a secret mission or if they meant sending him off to train with Luke.
  • He and Rey are both linked in some way, as seen through Kylo’s anger when the First Order Officer mentions “a girl”, leading Ren to an explosive outburst of anger and destruction of a group of super computers via his red cross-guard saber.
  • His real name is Ben Solo, after Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi.
  • Kylo kills Han after pleading with his father that he needs his help to move forward with his motives (paraphrasing).

Rey

  • We do not know her last name. This could be intentional to hide that she is a relative of the Skywalker family to some degree.
  • She is HIGHLY Force sensitive, demonstrating a strong understanding of several Force abilities that took months of training for Luke to understand and years to Master, such as wielding a lightsaber (it takes Force manipulation and understanding to wield this weapon the proper way), mind-melding/reading as seen when her and Kylo met for the first time (on screen) while Rey was being held captive aboard the First Order’s base, and Force-Telekinesis as seen when she was able to over-power Kylo Ren’s ability when attempting to gain control over Anakin’s/Luke’s blue lightsaber.
  • Rey had Force visions that lead her to Anakin’s lightsaber in a cellar of the cantina on the planet of Takodana, belonging to Maz Kanata. Among these visions are flashbacks to her childhood, leading viewers to assume she was taken away from her parents at a very young age, though we do not see who those parents are. These visions also include a voice-over narrative from Obi-Wan that says “Rey … these are your first steps”.
  • Rey is the only character with a British accent (stated be a form of accent from the planet Coruscant), which only Obi-Wan famously had in the series (British accent, not a Coruscant accent).
  • Her past is left a mystery, but the moment when she reveals Luke’s lightsaber before the credits roll, the expression on Luke’s face resembles that of a father who laid eyes on a long lost child (this is relative of course, and can not be supported by any additional facts).

So, with all the little tidbits above, what exactly is our theory?

Kylo Ren is a double-agent, secretly on the side of the Light, sent to join forces with the Dark Side in order to get close to Snoke (whose role is still a unique mystery), and end the Sith once and for all from the inner-workings of the First Order.

Rey, on the other hand, is daughter of Luke Skywalker and the grandaughter of Obi-Wan (stick with us here), her mother being the daughter of Obi-Wan (in order to make Luke and his significant other roughly the same age in order to have Rey be young enough to be related to both Skywalker and Kenobi). Rey demonstrated a strong position among the Dark Side or worse (killed younglings, perhaps her mother), and had her memory erased and was sent off world to Jakku to keep her safe from Snoke, the Dark Side, and herself.

When Kylo Ren is staring into the mask of his deceased grandfather, he asks for guidance to set him straight. What he is asking for, is guidance to stay among the Light as the Dark Side is too powerful and pulling him too strongly. Han, knowing that his son Ben/Kylo Ren would need to convince Snoke of his loyalties at all costs, would have to sacrifice himself at the hands of his son, who would need to kill his father to prove himself.

On the bridge, Kylo Ren as Ben, facing his father, asks for his father’s help to do what he knows he has to do but can’t without his help.

Han, knowing the pain and turmoil tearing his son apart, tells him that he is there for him in any way his son needs. Kylo, reluctantly lifts his lightsaber, and cuts down his father. Kylo now has the trust he needs to face Snoke and take down the evil Dark Lord behind The First Order.

He means well.

Luke, hiding in a galaxy far, far away (had to), is keeping his distance from Snoke and Rey, as the latter is too sensitive to the Force and any triggers may send her back onto the destructive path of evil.

Perhaps Rey fell to the Dark Side because of something that happened to her mother? Perhaps she blames her father, Luke or even Ben Solo for what happened?

Curious enough, it may also explain why the plans for Luke’s whereabouts were on Jakku in the first place. Maybe this village had a presence of someone looking out for Rey from a distance?

How curious it is the BB-8 and Poe Dameron happen to search for Luke on the same planet that Rey is currently located… Just who is Max von Sydow, and what was he doing with Luke’s location on Jakku? Very interesting…

This would explain that while we believe Rey to be on the Light, that she is actually the villain, and that Kylo Ren is the hero doing what he can by dismantling the evil from the inside. Also, mind-reading (through a forceful intrusion through someone’s mind) is considered a Dark Side ability, something that Kylo can do due to his Sith training, but Rey also does as well while being held captive against her will when she meets Kylo, albeit in a somewhat dark and taunting manner.

When Rey remarks how Kylo wishes to be like Vader, it is highly plausible that what Kylo wants is what Vader accomplished, which was ending the Sith at the time.

Dont forget that Vader was largely responsible for the destruction of the Sith of his era, taking down Palpatine/Sidious and ending his own life as Vader and dying as Anakin Skywalker before merging with the Light Side of the Force. Kylo Ren, Ben Solo wishes to wear the facade of the Dark Side only to complete what his grandfather started, and that is ending the Sith for good.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released on December 18, and after just 12 days already raked in over $1 billion with a B, a record previously held by Jurassic World, accomplished in 13 days. The film stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Max von Sydow, and was directed by J.J. Abrams.

PS: We also believe that Luke will put an end to Rey by killing her himself and becoming a member of the Dark Side after going through too many family problems. Either years of therapy, or the Dark Side. The latter seems more likely.
