Game of Thrones Finale Sets Ratings Record

Despite a rocky and controversial fifth season, ratings for the HBO epic continue to climb.

[toggler title=”TL;DR” ]‘Mother’s Mercy’ watched by over 8 million Americans. Highest audience in show’s run.[/toggler]

[dropcap size=small]R[/dropcap]emember all those people on Twitter who said they were going to stop watching Game of Thrones after Sansa was raped? And then again after Shireen was killed? Remember them? They lied.

Not even the NBA Finals were enough to stop the season five finale gaining an average audience of 8.1 million, the highest in its history. Thrones hit the 8 million mark for the first time with its season five premiere, as it continues to distance itself from the benchmark set by the pilot episode (watched by a comparatively pathetic 2.2 million).

Its audience has stuck with the show even after Ned Stark’s death, the Red Wedding and The Mountain and The Viper. It’s hard to believe anyone who says they’re going to stop watching having come this far, and knowing what the show is all about. Those numbers are only going to grow.

Game of Thrones returns for a sixth season in April 2016.
