Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are set to return to the Matrix universe in a fourth feature-film installment under the watchful eye of Lana Wachowski. Unfortunately due to scheduling, Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith may not appear.

“It’s unfortunate but actually I had this offer [for ‘The Visit’] and then the offer came from ‘The Matrix,’ so I knew it was happening but I didn’t have dates. I thought [I] could do both and it took eight weeks to work out that the dates would work – I held off on accepting [a role in ‘The Visit’ during that time]. I was in touch with [director] Lana Wachowski, but in the end she decided that the dates weren’t going to work. So we’d sorted the dates and then she sort of changed her mind. They’re pushing on ahead without me.”

While we know very little about the story of Matrix 4, it will be quite an interesting venture in discovering just how Neo and Trinity survived. Considering both were dead by the end of Revolutions, along with Agent Smith also being killed off (even his copies of copies were killed off during an epic fight sequence), it seems like a stretch for the movie to bring them all back. Then again, without any of them, it would be tough to draw a crowd to a sequel.

In any case, there are rumors floating around that some characters are to be played by other actors as younger versions, but just how that fits into this is hard to make sense of. We also know that in addition to Reeves and Moss returning, Jada Pinkett-Smith is also set to return with new additions to the cast including Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, and Eréndira Ibarra.

Matrix 4 (title unconfirmed) has been set to be released on May 21, 2021, according to Warner Bros. As far as we know, pre-production is in full swing but filming has yet to begin.
