The limited roadshow version of The Hateful Eight will have several differences compared to the version that is released in theaters.

[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]f you’re one of the lucky people who are planning on seeing the limited roadshow engagement of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight you’re in for a real treat compared to the rest of us who will be seeing the film when it is released on Christmas Day. According to Quentin Tarantino, the limited roadshow version will have “an overture and an intermission, and it will be three hours, two minutes. The multiplex version is about six minutes shorter, not counting the intermission time, which is about 12 minutes.”

It might surprise you to learn that it was Quentin Tarantino’s idea to feature a limited roadshow version of The Hateful Eight before the actual film was released. The director claimed that he liked the idea of the limited version offering something special, but that doesn’t mean you have to worry about not getting everything that you paid for. You’ll still be experiencing the same movie, just with several minutes missing.

“The 70 is the 70,” the director explained. “You’ve paid the money. You’ve bought your ticket. So you’re there. I’ve got you. But I actually changed the cutting slightly for a couple of the multiplex scenes because it’s not that. Now it’s on Showtime Extreme. You’re watching it on TV and you just kind of want to watch a movie on your couch. Or you’re at Hot Dog on a Stick and you just want to catch a movie.”

Roadshow experiences for films are rare when it comes to the filming industry. The amount of directors who used the option doesn’t even reach the ten-digit mark, which is probably why the roadshow experience will appeal to many people in one hundred different locations and makes it so unique. Quentin Tarantino believes that 70mm is an option that could fight against the common digital projection that is used at nearly every theater in the United States, something a he considers outrageous due to the continuous move away from celluloid.

“I didn’t realize what a lost cause 35mm projection was,” Quentin Tarantino said. “But what I also didn’t know is how excited everyone was going to be about 70. I think everybody is looking to see how we do in that first two weeks. But that’s also kind of exciting. I’m hoping that ‘Hateful Eight’ does well enough that becomes, for the filmmakers who care, the new premier way to launch their movie in an exclusive way.”

The Hateful Eight will be released in theaters on December 25th this year.
