This week at the Park we have a long awaited US release, a crime heist movie, and the return of a lovable fat panda.

Only Yesterday

Although the film was originally released in 1991, Studio Ghibli’s Only Yesterday never recieved a true release in the United States until now. The film follows the unmarried Taeko Okajima and her first extended trip outside of Tokyo to visit her sister’s family. While on the train there, Taeko daydreams about her younger self. As her vacation continues, she has extended flashbacks about the frustrations and good parts of her childhood, and wonders if her stressful adult life is what the young Taeko would have wanted for her future self. The movie has received great reviews since its release and it is very exciting for it to finally be released in North American theaters.

Only Yesterday features voice acting from Daisy Ridley, Dev Patel, Ashley Eckstein and Alison Fernandez and releases in US theaters on February 26th.

Triple 9

Triple 9 is an upcoming crime-thriller heist that centers around a group of criminals and corrupt cops who find themselves in trouble with the Russian mafia. The mafia is blackmailing the group and their only idea on what to do about it is to attempt a highly dangerous and challenging heist. One part of the team will plan the murder of the rookie officer Chris Allen, while the others will pull off the heist while the cops are distracted. The cast for the film is stellar and looks to be packed with action and thrills.

Triple 9 stars Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, Woody Harrelson, and Kate Winslet and hits theaters February 26th.

Kung Fu Panda 3

In the third installment in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, Po is finally reunited with his family and the rest of his panda clan. Po’s biological father comes looking for him and together they journey back to secret sanctuary where pandas live. Po feels like an outsider though and to make things even worse, an ancient evil spirit named Kai has risen and begins to terrorize China and steals the powers of defeated kung fu masters. It is up to Po to train the rest of the pandas in the ways of kung fu if they want to have any chance at beating Kai.

Kung Fu Panda 3 stars Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, James Hong, Bryan Cranston, Kate Hudson, and J. K. Simmons and hit theaters January 29th.
